First Questions #3

Together we have taken a look at some of the first questions recorded in the Bible. We discovered the very first question was asked by Satan. Then we discovered what is the first question from God that is recorded in the Bible. In both instances, the question revealed something about the character of the questioner.

Does this raise you curiosity as to what is the first question asked by a human being that is recorded in the Bible? I was, and I found it. Not surprisingly, this question also reveals something about the character of the questioner. Do you know the question? It actually is not too far from the other two questions. You will find it in Genesis 4:9. Do you know it yet? It was asked by a man whose name was Cain. He asked it not too long after he had murdered his brother Abel. When God confronted Cain that is when Cain asked the question: “Am I my brother’s keeper?” Have you heard that question before?

If we consider Cain to be representative of all human beings, we will find that this question reveals something about all of us, not just Cain. It does not reveal that we are all murderers, which we are not. It does reveal, however, something we have in common. We struggle with being bound to other people, especially people we do not want in our lives, or do not like, or with whom we are angry, or whom we may consider an outsider or enemy. Are we responsible for their well-being? We want to be free of any such responsibility. We want to say, “No.”

This has been a struggle for human beings for millennia. Some of Jesus’ most convicting teachings addressed this human problem. He would tell people then, and his words convict us still today: “Yes, you are bound to other people, even people you do not like, even people you consider to be enemies. You are your that person’s keeper, you are to be looking out for their best interest.” Wrap your mind around that!

Who do you struggle caring for? Who do you want to wash your hands of? Who do you stay angry with, even hate? Who do you want to see fail or be hurt in some way? Jesus wants you to know that you have to rise above your feelings and emotions. You have to find a way for your heart to change about them. If you struggle with that, then you have the same problem Cain had. This is pretty much a humanity-wide problem. Thankfully, Jesus has shown us a way to change that part of our character. So his teachings would be good to learn and put into practice. None of us has to stay like Cain.

Primeras Preguntas #3

Juntos hemos echado un vistazo a algunas de las primeras preguntas registradas en la Biblia. Descubrimos que la primera pregunta la hizo Satanás. Luego descubrimos cuál es la primera pregunta de Dios que está registrada en la Biblia. En ambos casos, la pregunta reveló algo sobre el carácter del interrogador.

¿Le despierta esto la curiosidad sobre cuál es la primera pregunta que hace un ser humano y que está registrada en la Biblia? Lo estaba y lo encontré. No sorprende que esta pregunta también revele algo sobre el carácter de quien pregunta. ¿Conoces la pregunta? En realidad, no está muy lejos de las otras dos preguntas. Lo encontrarás en Génesis 4:9. ¿Lo sabes todavía? Fue preguntado por un hombre que se llamaba Caín. Lo preguntó poco después de haber asesinado a su hermano Abel. Cuando Dios confrontó a Caín, fue cuando Caín hizo la pregunta: “¿Soy yo el guardián de mi hermano?” ¿Has escuchado esa pregunta antes?

Si consideramos a Caín como representante de todos los seres humanos, encontraremos que esta pregunta revela algo sobre todos nosotros, no sólo sobre Caín. No revela que todos somos asesinos, lo cual no lo somos. Sin embargo, revela algo que tenemos en común. Luchamos por estar atados a otras personas, especialmente a personas que no queremos en nuestras vidas, o que no nos agradan, o con quienes estamos enojados, o a quienes podemos considerar un extraño o un enemigo. ¿Somos responsables de su bienestar? Queremos estar libres de tal responsabilidad. Queremos decir: "No".

Esta ha sido una lucha para los seres humanos durante milenios. Algunas de las enseñanzas más convincentes de Jesús abordaron este problema humano. Entonces se lo decía a la gente, y sus palabras aún hoy nos convencen: “Sí, estás ligado a otras personas, incluso a las que no te agradan, incluso a las que consideras enemigas. Eres el guardián de esa persona y debes velar por sus mejores intereses”. ¡Envuelve tu mente en eso!

¿A quién te cuesta cuidar? ¿De quién quieres lavarte las manos? ¿Con quién sigues enojado, incluso odiando? ¿A quién te gustaría ver fracasar o resultar herido de alguna manera? Jesús quiere que sepas que tienes que elevarte por encima de tus sentimientos y emociones. Tienes que encontrar una manera de que tu corazón cambie respecto a ellos. Si luchas con eso, entonces tienes el mismo problema que tuvo Caín. Este es prácticamente un problema que afecta a toda la humanidad. Afortunadamente, Jesús nos ha mostrado una manera de cambiar esa parte de nuestro carácter. Así que sería bueno aprender y poner en práctica sus enseñanzas. Ninguno de nosotros tiene que quedarse como Caín.
