We like truth. Truly. No one likes being lied to.
Maybe, we only like truth sometimes. Sometimes, when it is convenient or necessary (in our minds), we want to be able to lie and get away with it. So there is no real harm in lying to others, but there is when others lie to us.
Maybe, one of our problems with truth is we are confused where to find it. In the last eight years, we have heard so much about fake news that we do not trust the news to be the source of truth…at least not the sources that portray a perspective we do not agree with. The internet has not been a solid source of truth at any point in its history. Ignorance and lies have been easily portrayed and peddled as truth there which sometimes costs people their lives. The education system that used to be a bedrock of presumed truth has been exposed as a powerful tool to do promote something else. Just because a people have multiple degrees and honors listed after their names does not inherently mean they are a source of truth.
Perhaps you trust someone to tell you the truth. That person can only tell you the truth as they know it. If what that person learned was actually false, you will find that you can’t always trust that person to be able to tell you the truth, no matter how much you love and trust them. This is disheartening, isn’t it?
Are you feeling uncomfortable with the prevalence of lying that goes on consistently around you? If you are, I would imagine you are not alone. As hard as telling the truth is at times, I believe most people prefer truth over lies. I believe most people would like to have a foundational source of truth that they could build their lives on - present and future. I believe they would love to see a source of truth that was powerful enough to spread throughout society, into every deceitful crack and crevice, and transform this world.
Where do we find such truth, one that is worthy and that can be trusted? Would you trust someone who has selflessly died for you? Would that not give them some pretty significant standing, make them someone worth listening to and trusting? If you are willing to consider that, I offer a few readings that can be found in the Bible: John 8:31-32, John 10:7-18, John 14:1-6, and John 19. See if you don’t find truth there.
¿La Verdad Según… ?
Nos gusta la verdad. Realmente. A nadie le gusta que le mientan.
Quizás sólo nos guste la verdad a veces. A veces, cuando es conveniente o necesario (en nuestra mente), queremos poder mentir y salirnos con la nuestra. Así que no hay ningún daño real en mentir a los demás, pero sí cuando otros nos mienten a nosotros.
Quizás uno de nuestros problemas con la verdad es que no sabemos dónde encontrarla. En los últimos ocho años, hemos escuchado tanto sobre noticias falsas que no confiamos en que sean la fuente de la verdad... al menos no en las fuentes que retratan una perspectiva con la que no estamos de acuerdo. Internet no ha sido una fuente sólida de verdad en ningún momento de su historia. La ignorancia y las mentiras se han retratado y vendido fácilmente como verdades que a veces cuestan la vida a las personas. El sistema educativo que solía ser la base de una supuesta verdad ha quedado expuesto como una poderosa herramienta para promover algo más. El hecho de que un pueblo tenga múltiples títulos y honores enumerados después de sus nombres no significa inherentemente que sean una fuente de verdad.
Quizás confíes en que alguien te diga la verdad. Esa persona sólo puede decirte la verdad tal como la conoce. Si lo que esa persona aprendió fue en realidad falso, descubrirás que no siempre puedes confiar en que esa persona podrá decirte la verdad, sin importar cuánto la ames y confíes en ella. Esto es desalentador, ¿no?
¿Se siente incómodo con la prevalencia de mentiras que se repiten constantemente a su alrededor? Si es así, me imagino que no está solo. Por más difícil que sea a veces decir la verdad, creo que la mayoría de la gente prefiere la verdad a la mentira. Creo que a la mayoría de las personas les gustaría tener una fuente fundamental de verdad sobre la que pudieran construir sus vidas, presente y futura. Creo que les encantaría ver una fuente de verdad que fuera lo suficientemente poderosa como para extenderse por toda la sociedad, en cada grieta y hendidura engañosa, y transformar este mundo.
¿Dónde encontramos esa verdad, una que sea digna y en la que se pueda confiar? ¿Confiarías en alguien que ha muerto desinteresadamente por ti? ¿No les daría eso una posición bastante significativa, no los convertiría en alguien digno de escuchar y en quien confiar?
