Distinctly Different

If someone showed you a panel of 5 colors, could you identify the colors? If the colors were yellow, blue, green, red and white, absolutely you could. Those colors are distinctly different from each other. If the colors were 5 shades of red: raspberry, burgundy, Persian, crimson, and prismatic red…could you identify those? Probably not, because they are not distinctly different. Picture a room painted in these 5 shades of red. Could you identify where each color was? Picture another room where everything was painted with these 5 shades of red, but in one spot there was the color yellow. Could you identify where the yellow was? Absolutely.

If you want to picture holiness then visualize the last picture. Holiness is distinctly different from all that surrounds it. People who are holy like God will be distinctly different from the culture around them. If you read a little in the Bible from Leviticus, you see that. Read Leviticus 18:1-5…then 19:1…then 20:22-24…then 20:26. The Lord God called Israel to be like him, not like the people where they used to live, or like the people where they were going to live. To be holy meant to be set apart from everyone else, and set apart for God. They were not to be just a shade different, but distinctly different, obviously different.

This presents a fundamental challenge to everyone who wants to reflect the Lord God. They have to be willing to look very different from the culture in which they move, if that culture does not reflect God. That culture could be the school campus, the classroom, the team, the hometown, the popular and acceptable in society; the friend circle, etc. Sad but true, it could even mean being distinctly different from the church culture one has known and moves in. This challenges us because we all like fitting into the culture we are in. Yet, holiness calls us to be distinctly different when our culture does not reflect God’s holiness.

Since none of us like going solo in life, how do we become holy like God? First, we have to spend more time with God so that we can recognize holiness. That could be initially hard to do when we are not used to looking for it. Reading the Bible a lot and praying a lot are helpful for that. There are other things that will help us, but this is a good place to start. But when you pray, go ahead and ask God for a second thing you will need: a group of people who know holiness and who can help you.

Claramente Diferente

Si alguien te mostrara un panel de 5 colores, ¿podrías identificar los colores? Si los colores fueran amarillo, azul, verde, rojo y blanco, absolutamente podrías. Esos colores son claramente diferentes entre sí. Si los colores fueran 5 tonos de rojo: frambuesa, burdeos, persa, carmesí y rojo prismático… ¿podrías identificarlos? Probablemente no, porque no son claramente diferentes. Imagínate una habitación pintada con estos 5 tonos de rojo.¿Pudiste identificar dónde estaba cada color? Imagínese otra habitación donde todo estaba pintado con estos 5 tonos de rojo, pero en un lugar estaba el color amarillo. ¿Pudiste identificar dónde estaba el amarillo? Absolutamente.

Si quieres imaginar la santidad, visualiza la última imagen. La santidad es claramente diferente de todo lo que la rodea. Las personas que son santas como Dios serán claramente diferentes de la cultura que las rodea. Si lees un poco en la Biblia desde Levítico, lo verás. Lea Levítico 18:1-5…luego 19:1…luego 20:22-24…luego 20:26. El Señor Dios llamó a Israel a ser como él, no como el pueblo donde vivían, ni como el pueblo donde iban a vivir. Ser santo significaba ser apartado de todos los demás y apartado para Dios. No debían ser sólo un matiz diferentes, sino claramente diferentes, obviamente diferentes.

Esto presenta un desafío fundamental para todo aquel que quiera reflejar al Señor Dios. Tienen que estar dispuestos a verse muy diferentes de la cultura en la que se mueven, si esa cultura no refleja a Dios. Esa cultura podría ser el campus de la escuela, el aula, el equipo, la ciudad natal, lo popular y aceptable en la sociedad; el círculo de amigos, etc. Triste pero cierto, incluso podría significar ser claramente diferente de la cultura de la iglesia que uno ha conocido y en la que se mueve. Esto nos desafía porque a todos nos gusta encajar en la cultura en la que vivimos. Sin embargo, la santidad nos llama a ser claramente diferente cuando nuestra cultura no refleja la santidad de Dios.

Dado que a ninguno de nosotros le gusta ir solo en la vida, ¿cómo podemos llegar a ser santos como Dios? Primero, tenemos que pasar más tiempo con Dios para que podamos reconocer la santidad. Inicialmente, esto podría resultar difícil de hacer cuando no estamos acostumbrados a buscarlo. Leer mucho la Biblia y orar mucho son útiles para eso. Hay otras cosas que nos ayudarán, pero este es un buen punto de partida. Pero cuando ores, sigue adelante y pídele a Dios una segunda cosa que necesitarás: un grupo de personas que conozcan la santidad y que puedan ayudarte.
